Berijam Lake

The mesmerizing Berijam Lake is a tranquil freshwater reservoir which is hidden amidst very thick forest adjacent to the picturesque hill town of Kodaikanal. This lake has very pure water and is main source of water for the town named Periyakulam which is anchored in the valley below Kodaikanal. 

Location

This picturesque lake is located at the distance of just 21 km from Kodaikanal in the state of Tamil Nadu and is considered as the most beautiful lake in entire South India. This exotic lake is located in the upper Palani Hills, at the original location of Fort Hamilton. 

History

This outstanding lake was created by dam, which forms an integral part of project related to micro –watershed development. It is said that earlier, a swamp existed to at this place, which was endowed by dense Shola forests. Col. Douglas Hamilton proposed the name of the lake site as a military cantonment in the year 1864. 

A small hut was built here and was named Fort Hamilton, which served as a military outpost. It was in the year 1867 that the dam and the lake were formed when the Collector of Madurai donated a part of his retirement fund for task. 

Attractions and Things to Do

This picturesque lake is endowed by the lush green pine population, and thus with its captivating beauty has caught the imagination of artists, nature enthusiasts and tourists. This beautiful lake is abode to enjoy with numerous activities. 

Boating in the Berijam Lake is an unique experience. Seafaring around the crystal clear water and watching the heavenly blessed ambiance with the bluish green enrolling hills will please anyone. The crystal clear water of the lake is home to numerous amphibians and species of fish, making it a paradise for fishing. 

Berijam is very rich in flora and fauna and has some original eco-initiatives to its credit, namely, South India’s first field –oriented education centre which was set up by the Forest Department. The region of Berijam in the Palani Hills falls under the once extensive Shola grassland eco system, also referred as ‘Cloud Forest’. These blooming grasslands hold a complex and highly diverse plant community which in turn supports arrays of fauna from insects to large mammals. 

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University have launched an active program which is the Development and Cultivation of medicinal plants like Digitalis, Pyrethrum, Mentha and Dioscorea sp, through the land of 99 acres research centre of the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) near Berijam. Kodaikanal is very renowned in the world for its ‘Magic Mushroom’ which produces hallucinogenic effects when consumed, and other poisonous mushroomsgrows around Berijam. 

Bison, Nilgiri Langur, Indian Elephants, Leopards, Malabar Giant Squirrels, Mouse Deer, Samber Deer, Wild Boar, Crested Porcupines are some of the mammals which can be witnessed here. Pairah Kites, Crested Serpent Eagles, Pale Rumped Swallows and the Edible-nests Swiftlets are some of the resident birds seen here with some migratory birds such as Common Rosefinch, Blue Chat, Leaf-Wrablers and Blyth’s Reed- Warbler. 

Trekking is another option where the adventure lover goes crazy here as one can indulge in small time trekking to overnight trekking. Head towards the Palani Hills where you can adventure short treks and hikes to tourist spots close by as well to local view points. Overnight treks are as well possible here where the trekkers get opportunity to spend a night in the local village.

Best Time to Visit

The climate of Kodaikanal is pleasant throughout the year but the best time to visit this Berijam Lake and its surrounding is during April – June and September to October. Kodaikanal receives heavy rainfall during the month of October to December which measures up to 165 CM.
 It is opened all days of the week from 09:00 AM to 03:00 PM. Please note that in order to take entry to this lake one have to get written permission from the District Forrest Officer. 

How to Get Here

Kodai Road is the nearest railway station which is about 100 km away from the prime town of Kodaikanal. From Kodai Road one can hire taxi in order to reach as it is the only mode for transportation. The closest Airport to Kodaikanal is the Madurai Airport which is located at the distance of 120 km away. 

Other than the Madurai Airport are the Trichy Airport and Coimabatore Airport which are located at the distance of 150 km and 175 km, respectively. From these airports one can easilyget bust to Kodaikanal. One can also enjoy the regular bus services which are available from the cities of Bangalore, Chennair, Madurai, Pondicherry, Coimbatore and many more.

Often referred as the Scotland of India, Coorg or Kodagu is a stunning hill station in the southern part of the beautiful Karnataka state at a distance of 252 km from Bangalore and 120 km from Mysore.

 This hill beauty is place at an elevation of 4000 meters above sea level in the Western Ghats and is bordered by verdant hills and splendid coffee plantations. 

The culture of this place is different from South Indian culture which makes it distinct from other places of India. The Coorgs are known to be the bravest and are the only community in India to own and carry a gun in any parts of India.

 The wandering natural beauty and the several magnetisms of this place draw large number of tourists from India and other countries. A nature walk along the flourishing coffee plantation is sure to give you an immense pleasure and relief from your stressed life. 

Major Places of Interests:

Madikeri Fort: Constructed around 19th Century, this historical fort is a double-storey building located in Madikeri housing a chapel, museum, temple and a prison. It is originally built of mud but was replaced by stone by Tipu Sultan who briefly ruled this place. The sculptural brilliance of 2 elephants standing outside the compound is truly masterpiece and on the whole the fort is worth paying a visit. 

Omkareshwar Temple: This 194 years old temple devoted to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu is an amazing fusion of Gothic and Islamic architecture. According to a legend, king LIngarajendra II put a Brahmin to death unfairly hence the Brahmin began to anguish him. 

So, in the counsel of his Dewan he built this temple in 1820 to gratify the spirit of Brahmin that used to distress him. While on your visit you can see the history of this temple which is inscribed on a copper plate by the king. One can also see a Linga near to the opening of this temple. 
Raja Seat: It is supposed to be the place where the kings used to spend their evenings having an enjoyable and spectacular view of their kingdom and surroundings. Even today, one can have a same majestic view and charm of the emerald surroundings relishing the fresh air.

Harangi: It is a site of the Harangi reservoir and is famed for its tree houses and picnicking. Large number of people visits this place in order to spend their time amidst nature which can be fulfilled in this place. 

Abbi Falls: Positioned at a distance of 5 km from the main town of Coorg it is one of the major attractions of this place. One has to rent a taxi or cab or any private transportation to reach the main road and from there one has to walk through an integrated cardamom and coffee plantations to reach this wonderful falls. 

Large number of people visits this place for picnicking and relishing an imposing view of the vicinity. The giant roar of this falls which can be heard from the main road itself will captivate any of the passing by visitors to attend this place. 

Coorg has lots of other beautiful spots where you can spend your time including Bagamandala Temple, Talacauvery, Iruppu Falls, Nagarhole Park, Nisardaghama Forest and many more.
